Epstein affair: The downfall of Peter Mandelson, the evil genius of the British Labour Party
As the architect of New Labour, Mandelson was the driving force behind the British left's past triumphs. In a career spanning 40 years, the indestructible strategist had survived every scandal. Now, he faces public disgrace for his close relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein that threatens to bring down Prime Minister Keir Starmer with him.
Some political figures appear untouchable: Scandals splash around them, yet they always seem to slip through unscathed. That was long the case for Conservative prime minister Boris Johnson (2019-2022), who racked up gaffes and questionable associations before the "Partygate" scandal – illegal parties held at 10 Downing Street during the Covid-19 pandemic – finally brought him down.

The Iranian protesters killed by regime gunfire on January 8
Sina Ashkbousi, Behrouz Mansouri, Mansoureh Heydari, Keyvan Moradi Mirani and Roubina Aminian were killed on the first day of protests against the Iranian regime. Their stories reflect both the diversity of the protest movement and the brutality of the crackdown.
Before being shot dead in Tehran, 17-year-old Sina Ashkbousi looked at his mother and told her several times: "Mom, we've won. They're not going to shoot us." On the night of January 8, the first day of the mass protests by Iranians against the Islamic Republic, this shy and reserved high school student, a huge Harry Potter fan, took to the streets with his parents. Along with around 20 other young people, Ashkbousi stood in the front row. "They were all chanting slogans," said his aunt Samira, who lives abroad and prefers not to give her last name. "They were all happy. At 10 pm, Sina told his mother: 'Mom, take care of Dad.'"

The 20-year prison sentence handed down to the pro-democracy activist and former media tycoon is the latest sign of the ruthless crackdown under the authority of Xi Jinping, marking the end of the freedom that once set the former British colony apart.
On Monday, February 9, the final nail was hammered into the coffin of the freedom that for so long had made Hong Kong a unique territory in the Chinese world.
