Pastor de megaigreja é forçado a se arrepender por gravar relação sexual consensual com sua esposa.
Nathan Peternel está envolvido em vários escândalos. Mas ele está sendo punido pelo único que não deveria importar.
Nathan Peternel , líder da Life Church, uma megaigreja de Indianápolis afiliada às Assembleias de Deus, está envolvido em um escândalo sexual bizarro que é uma mistura de horror e também uma ferida autoinfligida baseada na mentalidade da Cultura da Pureza.

Para tornar isso ainda mais relevante, Peternel (pronuncia-se PETE-ur-NELL) é um aliado próximo do vice-governador de Indiana, Micah Beckwith , um nacionalista cristão que fantasia sobre viver em uma teocracia fundamentalista em praticamente todas as entrevistas. Peternel contratou Beckwith para liderar uma de suas igrejas em Noblesville, cargo que Beckwith ainda ocupa hoje, e apresenta com ele um podcast chamado “Jesus, Sexo e Política”.

Mais recentemente, o gabinete de Beckwith contratou um escritório de advocacia com fortes laços com a igreja por meio de um contrato sem licitação , uma decisão que especialistas em ética descreveriam como completamente insana .
Enfim, para entender o que está acontecendo, é preciso voltar uns seis meses, quando o filho de 24 anos de Peternel foi preso por crimes online envolvendo crianças. A polícia tinha provas de que ele possuía e distribuía material ilícito por meio de um grupo do Snapchat chamado “Diddy Disciples” (eca) e que havia ainda mais material ilícito em um computador na casa dele.
Na época, a igreja divulgou um comunicado dizendo estar "profundamente triste" com as alegações:
Estamos profundamente tristes com as recentes alegações envolvendo o filho adulto do Pastor Nathan e queremos expressar nossa sincera solidariedade a todos os afetados. Nossas orações estão com o Pastor Nathan e sua família neste momento incrivelmente difícil, assim como com as famílias e indivíduos impactados por esses eventos. Nossos corações permanecem pesados por todos que estão sofrendo.
Ao atravessarmos este momento desafiador, reafirmamos nosso compromisso com os mais altos padrões de integridade, responsabilidade e transparência. Mantemo-nos firmes em nossa missão como igreja de oferecer esperança, trazer cura e permanecer firmes em nossa fé, buscando justiça e lançando luz na escuridão.
Para sermos claros, não há motivos para acreditar que o próprio Peternel soubesse de nada disso, muito menos que o tolerasse. Aliás, em vários episódios do podcast dele com Beckwith, os dois discutiram moralidade sexual e exploração infantil — sempre insistindo que se tratava de um problema de pecado , culpando os liberais por apoiarem os direitos LGBTQ+ e afirmando que pornografia de qualquer tipo destruiria relacionamentos. Pessoas com fé inabalável jamais se envolveriam em tais artimanhas.
Mas quando a polícia estava examinando os computadores do filho, também descobriu que ele tinha em seu celular mais de 50 fotos/vídeos que aparentemente mostravam seus pais nus e/ou fazendo sexo. (O que levanta uma série de questões muito diferentes .)
Algum desses vídeos era ilegal ou problemático? Não. Não há motivo para acreditar que havia algo de errado com eles. Se um casal quer se filmar para seu próprio prazer, ou mesmo para compartilhar com outras pessoas consensualmente, quem se importa?
Aparentemente, todos na igreja de Peternel, porque têm uma abordagem completamente doentia em relação ao sexo.
Em dezembro, Peternel falou à sua igreja sobre o escândalo e disse que “dentro do pacto do nosso casamento, minha esposa e eu criamos fotos e vídeos íntimos privados”. Esses arquivos estavam em uma parte protegida por senha do computador dele, mas seu filho, “que estava sob efeito de drogas na época”, aparentemente invadiu o sistema e teve acesso a eles.
Mais tarde, ele garantiu à igreja que "tudo foi apagado".
Resumindo: o filho de Peternel fez algo terrivelmente criminoso … mas o pedido de desculpas que ele fez na igreja dizia respeito apenas aos vídeos privados que ele fez com a esposa, vídeos que ninguém precisava saber e pelos quais ele não tinha motivo para se desculpar.
Enquanto tudo isso acontecia, pessoas que frequentavam a igreja dele estavam revelando publicamente que esse cara era obcecado por sexo há décadas, a ponto de perguntar a garotas menores de idade sobre seus hábitos sexuais . Ele é simplesmente assustador, a ponto de outros líderes da igreja o repreenderem por ir longe demais. Alguns membros de seu antigo grupo de jovens, que ele chamava de "Stormfront", em referência à organização neonazista, disseram que seu comportamento equivalia a "aliciamento". Uma dessas garotas postou um vídeo no YouTube com provas do que vivenciou durante uma sessão de "aconselhamento" com ele, incluindo perguntas dele a ela (que tinha 17 anos na época) se ela tinha orgasmo com o parceiro, "se os seios dela precisavam ser tocados" para ela chegar ao clímax, se eles usavam brinquedos sexuais, etc. Esse casal nunca mais voltou àquela igreja.
É importante notar que isso provavelmente não seria aceitável mesmo se a garota fosse mais velha, simplesmente porque não se trata de terapia ou aconselhamento de verdade. Mas é assim que muitos pastores conservadores falam sobre sexo. Eles fazem parecer que qualquer tipo de experimentação pré-marital é o pior tipo de pecado... mas que, a partir do momento do casamento — tipo, no instante seguinte ao casamento —, você e seu cônjuge podem explorar todas as fantasias possíveis, de acordo com os desejos de seus corações. O que eles geralmente omitem é que a falta de experimentação faz com que muitas pessoas se casem jovens para finalmente terem relações sexuais, que se casem antes de terem a menor ideia do que realmente lhes dá prazer sexual, que se sintam obrigadas a fazer o que outra pessoa (geralmente o homem) quer, mesmo que não estejam gostando (às vezes a ponto de abuso), e que frequentemente se sintam fracassadas se não estiverem curtindo o sexo no casamento depois de anos ouvindo que seria sempre maravilhoso.
O conselho de Peternel já era péssimo desde o início. O fato de a garota ser menor de idade só piorou tudo.
Enquanto isso, Beckwith parecia estar cuidando das relações públicas da família. Ele disse aos fiéis que o "inimigo" estava espalhando "mentiras" sobre a família e que as pessoas deveriam parar de questionar qualquer coisa que Peternel estivesse fazendo.
Há algumas semanas, o filho de Peternel foi finalmente condenado à prisão pelos seus crimes. Ele passará cerca de quatro anos atrás das grades, ficará em liberdade condicional por dois anos depois disso e terá que se registrar como agressor sexual pelo resto da vida. Ok. Tudo bem. Ninguém está defendendo o filho aqui.
Mas é aqui que as coisas tomam um rumo (mais uma) bizarro.
Enquanto toda essa polêmica envolvendo o filho se desenrola, as Assembleias de Deus não conseguem superar o fato de Peternel ter feito vídeos sexuais com sua esposa. Seus estatutos mencionam que "transgressões morais envolvendo pornografia" podem ser motivo para medidas disciplinares.

Presumivelmente, isso se refere a pessoas que assistem ou são viciadas nisso. Poderíamos ter uma discussão à parte sobre se isso faz algum sentido — sabemos o quanto os cristãos conservadores gostam de punir até mesmo formas saudáveis de sexo —, mas isso também é muito diferente de se filmar dentro dos limites consensuais do casamento.
No entanto, na sexta-feira passada, Peternel anunciou que se afastaria de seu cargo na igreja enquanto uma investigação é realizada e ele passa por um "processo de restauração".
“Após uma análise cuidadosa e minuciosa, o Presbitério Executivo Distrital concluiu que certos comportamentos pessoais relacionados ao meu uso e armazenamento de conteúdo digital privado envolvendo minha esposa não atenderam aos padrões esperados de um ministro credenciado e foram considerados impróprios para a liderança ministerial ”, escreveu Peternel em seu e-mail obtido pela 24sight News .
Peternel escreveu que se afastaria do cargo a partir de 1º de março, mas não especificou quanto tempo duraria o "processo de restauração".
Ao que eu só posso dizer… POR QUÊ? Esse cara deveria reavaliar completamente seus pontos de vista sobre sexo. Ele deveria parar de tratar a homossexualidade como pecado. Ele deveria parar de perguntar a crianças sobre suas vidas sexuais. Ele deveria se desculpar por sugerir que a fé religiosa se sobreporia a quaisquer “pecados” em potencial — muito menos crimes — já que sua própria família é a prova de que ser cristão devoto não resolve tudo magicamente.
A única coisa pela qual ele não precisa se desculpar é por ter feito vídeos íntimos com a esposa, e ainda assim esse é o único problema que as Assembleias de Deus têm com tudo o que ele fez. Essa é a única razão pela qual ele está se afastando do púlpito.
Aliás, essa denominação já foi exposta como um refúgio seguro para predadores sexuais .
Agora, é perfeitamente possível que Peternel não esteja nos contando toda a verdade. Talvez ele tenha sido repreendido por todas as vezes que tentou se excitar falando sobre sexo com crianças ao longo dos anos, mas essa é a desculpa que ele está compartilhando publicamente. (Não é como se tivéssemos visto o relatório interno das Assembleias de Deus.)
Mas se essa for realmente a única razão pela qual ele está sendo punido, é absurdo. De todos os motivos pelos quais Peternel deveria se afastar dos holofotes, ele está fazendo isso pelo menos problemático e o único que não precisa mudar.
Enquanto isso, com tudo isso acontecendo, famílias estão deixando a megaigreja e pastores estão renunciando . Então, pelo menos algumas pessoas chegaram ao seu limite com esse ministério ridículo. Talvez não pelos mesmos motivos que me levariam a desistir há muito tempo, mas enfim. O podcast dele com Beckwith não lança novos episódios desde setembro, mas alguns episódios envolvendo a vida sexual do próprio Peternel foram deletados.
Esta poderia facilmente ter sido uma história sobre um pastor pedindo desculpas pelos crimes do filho e reconhecendo que a fé deles não impediu nada disso. Peternel poderia ter admitido que crimes sexuais não decorrem de ser gay ou trans, e que não são impedidos por ser cristão. Em vez disso, sua própria vida sexual foi atingida no fogo cruzado de uma denominação que tem uma ideia completamente distorcida do que o sexo, de qualquer tipo, deveria ser.
Agora Peternel está sendo forçado a se arrepender, mesmo sem ter prejudicado pessoalmente ninguém. (Bem, pelo menos não com as fitas de sexo.) Ele merece ser punido por traumatizar crianças, por não ter prestado mais atenção ao que seu filho estava fazendo ou por ter se aliado a Beckwith. Mas ele está sendo punido apenas por gravar sexo consensual com sua esposa. Em qualquer estrutura ética sensata, isso não é pecado. Nem sequer é um escândalo. Literalmente, não é da conta de mais ninguém.
Mas quando se vive no ecossistema moral distorcido da Cultura da Pureza, até mesmo a intimidade consensual se torna uma ofensa punível se não for feita conforme as regras (chata, estilo missionário, com o propósito de gerar filhos, etc.). As Assembleias de Deus exigem contrição pela única coisa que Peternel fez que não foi estranha .
O que podemos aprender com tudo isso? Quando líderes religiosos monitoram obsessivamente o comportamento sexual privado entre adultos que consentem, podemos apostar que estão ignorando questões como coerção, aliciamento e proteção institucional. Peternel agora se arrepende de uma conduta pessoal inofensiva, sem jamais confrontar os problemas estruturais mais profundos que ajudou a criar.
Megachurch pastor forced to repent for recording consensual sex with his wife
Nathan Peternel is caught up in a number of scandals. But he's being punished for the only one that shouldn't matter.
Nathan Peternel, the leader of Life Church, an Indianapolis-based megachurch affiliated with the Assemblies of God, is caught up in a bizarre sex scandal that’s a mix of horror as well as a self-inflicted wound based on a Purity Culture mindset.

Making this even more relevant, Peternel (pronounced PETE-ur-NELL) is a close ally of Indiana’s Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith, a Christian Nationalist who fantasizes about living in a fundamentalist theocracy during damn near every interview. Peternel hired Beckwith to lead one of his churches in Noblesville, a position Beckwith still holds today, and co-hosts a podcast with him called “Jesus, Sex & Politics.”

More recently, Beckwith’s office hired a law firm with close ties to the church with the help of a no-bid contract, a decision that ethics experts would describe as batshit crazy.
Anyway, to make any sense of what’s happening, you have to go back about six months when Peternel’s 24-year-old son was arrested for online crimes involving children. Law enforcement had evidence that he possessed and was distributing illicit material via a Snapchat group for “Diddy Disciples” (ugh) and had even more on a computer back at his house.
The church put out a statement at the time saying they were “deeply saddened” by the allegations:
We are deeply saddened by the recent allegations involving Pastor Nathan’s adult son and want to express our heartfelt sympathy to all those affected. Our prayers are with Pastor Nathan and his family during this incredibly difficult time, as well as with the families and individuals impacted by these events. Our hearts remain heavy for all who are suffering.
As we walk through this challenging moment, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and transparency. We hold fast to our mission as a church to offer hope, bring healing, and stand firm in our faith, seeking justice while shining a light in the darkness.
To be clear, there’s no reason to believe Peternel himself knew about any of this, much less condoned it. In fact, multiple episodes of his podcast with Beckwith featured the two men discussing sexual morality and child exploitation—always insisting that this is a sin problem, and blaming liberals for supporting LGBTQ rights, and saying that pornography of any kind would destroy relationships. People with rock-solid faith would never be caught up in such shenanigans.
But when police were searching through the son’s computers, they also discovered that he had on his phone over 50 photos/videos that apparently showed his parents naked and/or having sex. (Which raises a host of very different questions.)
Were any of those videos illegal or problematic? Nope. There’s no reason to believe there was anything wrong with those videos. If a couple wants to videotape themselves for their own pleasure, or even to share with others consensually, who the hell cares?
Apparently, everyone in Peternel’s church, because they have a completely unhealthy approach to sex.
In December, Peternel addressed his church about the scandal and said that “within the covenant of our marriage, my wife and I created private intimate photos and videos.” Those files were on a password-protected part of his computer, but his son “who was high at the time” apparently hacked into the system and got access to them.
He later reassured the church that “everything has been deleted.”
So to recap: Peternel’s son did something criminally horrible… but the apology he gave at church concerned only the private videos he made with his wife, videos no one needed to know about and videos he had no reason to apologize for.
While all this was happening, people who attended his church were going public with the fact that this dude has been obsessed with sex for decades to the point of asking underage girls about their sexual habits. He’s just plain creepy to the point where other church leaders reprimanded him for taking things too far. Some members of his former youth group, which he called “Stormfront” like the neo-Nazi organization, said his behavior amounted to “grooming.” (Kudos to the outlet 24sight News and reporter Tom LoBianco for covering all this. If you’re not subscribed to him, you should be.)
One of those girls posted a video to YouTube with receipts about what she experienced during a “counseling” session with him, including him asking her (a 17-year-old at the time) whether she orgasmed with her partner, “if her breasts had to be touched” in order to climax, if they used sex toys, etc. That couple never returned to that church again.
It should be noted that this arguably wouldn’t be okay even if the girl was older only because it’s not actual therapy or counseling. But this is how many conservative pastors talk about sex. They make it sound like any kind of pre-marital experimentation whatsoever is The Worst Kind of Sin… but that from the moment you’re married—like the split-second after you’re married—you and your spouse can explore every possible kink to your hearts’ desires. What they usually fail to mention is that the lack of experimentation means many people marry young so they can finally have sex, that they get married before they have any clue what they actually enjoy sexually, that they feel obligated to go through with what someone else (usually the man) wants even if they’re not enjoying it (sometimes to the point of abuse), and that they often feel like failures if they’re not enjoying marital sex after years of being told it would be nothing but fireworks every time.
Peternel’s advice was awful to begin with. That the girl was underage just made everything that much worse.
Beckwith, meanwhile, appeared to be running PR for the family. He told churchgoers that the “enemy” was spreading “lies” about the family and people should stop challenging anything Peternel was doing.
A couple of weeks ago, Peternel’s son was finally sentenced to jail for his crimes. He’ll spend about four years behind bars, be on probation for two years after that, and have to register as a sex offender for life. Okay. Fine. No one’s defending the son here.
But here’s where things take a(nother) bizarre turn.
While all this drama involving the son has been going on, the Assemblies of God can’t get over the fact that Peternel made sex videos with his wife. Their by-laws mention that “Moral transgression involving pornography” could be a cause for disciplinary action.

That presumably refers to people who watch it or are addicted to it. We could have a separate conversation about whether than makes any sense—we know how much conservative Christians love to punish even healthy forms of sex—but that’s also very different from filming yourself within the consensual bounds of marriage.
Yet on Friday last week, Peternel announced that he would be stepping aside from his church role while an investigation takes place and he goes through a “restorative process.”
“After a careful and thorough review, the District Executive Presbytery concluded that certain personal behaviors related to my use and retention of private digital content involving my spouse fell short of the standards expected of a credentialed minister and were determined to be unbecoming of ministerial leadership,” Peternel wrote in his email obtained by 24sight News.
Peternel wrote he would step aside beginning March 1, he did not say how long the “restorative process” would last.
To which I can only say… WHY? This guy should be reevaluating his views on sex entirely. He should stop treating homosexuality as a sin. He should stop asking kids about their sex lives. He should apologize for suggesting that religious faith would override any potential “sins”—much less crimes—since his own family is proof that being devout Christians doesn’t magically fix everything.
The only thing he doesn’t need to apologize for is making sex tapes with his wife, and yet that’s the only problem the Assemblies of God has with anything he’s done. That’s the only reason he’s stepping away from the pulpit.
That denomination, by the way, has already been exposed as a safe haven for sex predators.
Now, it’s entirely possible that Peternel isn’t telling us the whole truth. Maybe he was reprimanded for all the ways he’s tried to get off on talking about sex with children over the years, but this is the excuse he’s sharing publicly. (It’s not like we’ve seen the internal report from the Assemblies of God.)
But if this truly is the only reason he’s being punished, it’s absurd. Of all the reasons Peternel should be stepping away from the spotlight, he’s doing it for the least problematic one and the only one that doesn’t need to change.
Meanwhile, as all this is going on, families are leaving the megachurch and pastors are resigning. So at least some people have reached their breaking point with this ridiculous ministry. Maybe not for the same reasons I would have bowed out a long time ago, but whatever. The podcast he has with Beckwith hasn’t aired any new episodes since September, but select episodes involving Peternel’s own sex life have been deleted.
This could have easily been a story about a pastor apologizing for his son’s crimes and acknowledging that their faith didn’t prevent any of it. Peternel could have admitted that crimes involving sex don’t stem from being gay or trans, and they’re not stopped by being Christian. Instead, his own sex life got caught in the crossfire of a denomination that has a completely unhealthy idea of what sex of any kind ought to look like.
Now Peternel is being forced to repent even though he personally harmed literally no one. (Well, not from the sex tapes, anyway.) He deserves to be punished for traumatizing children, or for not paying closer attention to what his son was doing, or for forging an alliance with Beckwith. But he’s only being punished for recording consensual sex with his wife. In any sane ethical framework, that’s not a sin. It’s not even a scandal. It’s quite literally no one else’s business.
But when you live in the warped moral ecosystem of Purity Culture, even consensual intimacy becomes a punishable offense if it’s not done by the book (boring, missionary-style, for the purpose of child-bearing, etc). The Assemblies of God is demanding contrition for the one thing Peternel did that wasn’t weird.
What can we learn from all this? When church leaders obsessively monitor private sexual behavior between consenting adults, you can bet good money that they’re ignoring things like coercion, grooming, and institutional protection. Peternel is now repenting for harmless personal conduct while never confronting the deeper structural problems he helped create.
